Product Description
HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, the new album from 14x Grammy Award winning band U2. The band continues to reinvent themselves and push the boundaries of music. The first single is "Vertigo."
Amazon.com
The album that carries U2 into its 25th year--and likely the mixed blessings of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame--is one of its most frank and focused since the days of October and War. But its gestation was anything but simple, in part salvaged from '03 sessions the band deemed subpar. Enter Steve Lillywhite, the band's original producer and sometime collaborator in the decades since, who helped retool the track "Native Son" (originally an antigun screed) into the aggressive iPod anthem "Vertigo" and leaves his distinctive stamp on the muscular "All Because of You." Perhaps weary of ceaseless, fashion-driven reinvention in the wake of monumental success, U2 seem only too happy here to re-embrace their original sonic trademarks in service of more daring, pop-melodic hooks than they've collected in one place in decades. The Eno/Lanois produced "Love and Peace or Else" may shimmer with the duo's electro-production conceits, but it's Edge's lugubrious, postmodern John Lee Hooker guitar swagger that drives it. Elsewhere, Bono's trademark dramaturgy is spotlighted on "City of Blinding Lights," the unabashed romance of "A Man and a Woman," and the confessional "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own." It may come wrapped in a conundrum--is it nostalgic retrenchment or a sum of the band's endless musical catharsis?--It's also the album where, Fly and MacPhisto be damned, U2 boldly claims its arena titan mantle with apologies to no one. --Jerry McCulley

About the Artist
U2 formed in their native Dublin in 1978 and remains intact with its four original band members: Bono, Larry Mullen, Adam Clayton and The Edge. The band has sold more than 120 million records worldwide in an extraordinary career that has firmly established them as one of the worlds greatest rock n roll bands. Along the way, U2 has earned a phenomenal 14 Grammy Awards, seven of which were for their last studio album, 2000s "All That You Cant Leave Behind," including two consecutive awards for "Record of the Year." As popular for their legendary live shows as for their groundbreaking albums, U2 innovates and inspires while packing football stadiums and sweaty clubs around the world. What is next for the group that continues to reinvent themselves and push the boundaries of music?

The sound of this record is mainstream U2. The experimentation of the 1990's is largely absent, as is the folk/country/blues sounds of Joshua Tree and ATYCLB. Here's a track by track review. I've included B-sides, because frankly they should've made the final cut.
Here are the tracks that are worth putting on your i-pod:
'Vertigo' (can you think of a better U2 rocker?)
Fast Cars (a hypnotic, flamenco influenced b-side that should've made the final cut). This is more of the experimental side of U2 that should've made it to the final cut.
'Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own' (Edge's guitar playing makes this ballad go).
'All Because of You' (a great rocking tune). Edge and Adam Clayton's ability to take a standard rock song and do interesting things with the bass and guitar sounds is what sets U2 and all the post-punk bands apart from mainstream contemporaries.
'Crumbs From Your Table' - very underrated. Showcases the band's sound. They should've repeated the 'cool down mama' part in the second verse, however.
'City of Blinding Lights' - a crowd favorite that packs the emotion and sound of the old U2 with the writing, production and guitar playing of today. A great track.
'Original of the Species' - hate the lyrics, and hate the version on this CD. The live version that appears on a DVD and also appeared on an ipod ad however, rocks. Download that one.
'Love Peace or Else' - reminiscent of Bullet the Blue Sky (though not quite as good). They created a great sound for Edge on this one.
'Yahweh' - reminscent of the Unforgettable Fire days. A nice song to sing along to. The live performances of this track are outstanding.
'Miracle Drug' - This one I initially liked but have grown tired of. 'Fast Cars' would've been a better choice.
'Neon Lights' - a b-side. A mellow, piano driven track that reminds one of the October days.
I've omitted some tracks, but in short, it's a solid, though not great CD. Yet, the sound of this record is fantastic and it makes you want to hear it more and more.
But to my surprise, I found myself haunted by the songs, especially "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" (which I believe will join the ranks as one of the best U2 songs ever written). This album is dense. Everytime I listen to it, I catch another layer of music or another idea occurs to me suggested by a bit of lyric. This album is quickly becoming one of my favorite U2 albums.
I think the initial reviews created certain expectations by making comparisons with prior U2 works. But there is no comparison. U2 have never been at this place and time in their lives. It would be ridiculous if they were still stuck in the place they were in 10 or 20 years ago. This is an evolution even from "All That You Can't Leave Behind", which is my least favorite and is far surpassed by this album.
While I also yearn for that raw edginess that once was U2, this album achieves what all of U2's other albums have done by giving us a snap shot of this time and this place in U2's evolution. This album is not "in-your-face" confrontational; it is much more sophisticated than that. It confronts you on a deep personal level. And true to U2 form, these songs bring you to the highest high while simultaneously taking you to the lowest low. In these songs, U2 have created genuine "soul music" in the way that only U2 can. The masters are still at it.
(BTW, I remember the same kind of passionate, intense negative reviews when (1) "October" came out because people compared it to "Boy" and (2) "Achtung Baby" came out because it was compared to "Joshua Tree". And what are people saying now about these albums?)
Miracle Drug is one of their best ever. Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own will bring you to tears if you listen to it at the right time in your life. Love and Peace is a great ballad, they'll probably be playing it with Sunday Bloody Sunday or Please on the tour. City Of Blinding Lights has an opening that is better than "Where the Streets Have No Name" (i know you joshua tree fans will get mad at me for that last comment). One Step Closer is the type of song you'll want to listen to to cool down, and gather your own life together. "Origin of the Species" is very good, but i think it's overrated compared to the other songs on the album. "A Man And Woman" is probably the worst song, but for a U2 album this means you will still enjoy it and listen to it close to a million times. "Crumbs from the Table" is the song you will listen to and think is stupid, and about 5 minutes later have to hear over and over again! PS the DVD version is better than the album version. Yahweh, was the first song i ever heard of the album, and one of their best closers ever.
The album is made by a band that knows music better than any other band out there. If you like U2, you have no excuse on why not to get this. If you don't like U2, this is your first excuse on why to love them.
