Naturally 7 are an American music group with a distinct acappella style they call "vocal play" which according to group leader Roger Thomas is "the art of becoming an instrument using the human voice to create the sound". They simulate the sounds of an instrumental band using only their voices, mouths and distortion effects.
The group was formed in 1999 in New York City. It currently consists of the Thomas brothers (Roger (musical director, arranger, first baritone, rapping) and Warren (drums, guitar, third tenor)), Rod Eldridge (first tenor, scratching, trumpet), Rickey Cort (fourth tenor, guitar), Dwight Stewart (second baritone, vocals,... The new album Both Sides Now is Naturally 7's seventh studio-album and represents a further remarkable development for the renowned vocal-group from NYC.
Some of their previous biggest successes were notable interpretations of world-hits from Phil Collins, Feel it (In The Air Tonight), Coldplay’s epic‚ Fix You to their self-penned‚ Wall Of Sound, all of which they performed during 3 world-tours with Michael Bublé in 467 shows to over 4 million people in 25 countries .
This band has toured everywhere and done so much since the late nineties. The album starts with the patriotic English track 'Jerusalem'. Naturally 7 adding their own acapella style to the very famous song. If you are a fan of the TV show Glee then this album will be right up your street!
The creativity of just the voices which seem to manage to produce an amazing sound is stunning. It's full and powerful when you wouldn't expect it to be. Some of the biggest and loudest bands in the world can't create such a rounded sound as Naturally 7 do. The richness of the voices is exceptional, which you kind of take for granted with an acapella band.
One of the strongest tracks on the album is Shape Of My Heart, this version is a lovely addition. The gospel sounds keep coming from track to track, also coming out so much in the song 'I Need Air', which is magnificent.
If you are looking for a goosebump kind of moment then another track that is well worth listening to is 'Going Home'. This track is euphoric. The same could be said about the cover of the now modern classic 'Hello', which was of course a big Adele tune.
I have to give a special mention to the Paul McCartney track Pipes of Peace. This reminds me of my Dad playing this when I was growing up. A great song and this version really left me with a smile on my face and fond memories, well done guys, and thanks.
This isn't an album full of songs you will use in your local church on a Sunday morning, but the same could be said about many songs from a Switchfoot album (and many other artists). This album is for someone to listen to and enjoy the uplifting nature of the songs in a world which sadly can seem to be full of negativity.
If you are looking for great singing, well known uplifting songs, sung by a bunch of great guys then this is an album well worth checking out.
