Soul Survivor will always have a special place in my heart. For the last ten years myself and a group of friends have headed to Shepton Mallet together to experience the Summer festival. Soul Survivor is one of the largest gatherings of young worshippers in the UK and each year it continues to impact the Christian journey of many young people. This summer saw over 30,000 young people attend the Soul Survivor and Momentum festivals. Soul Survivor is one of the largest gatherings of young worshippers in the UK and each year it continues to impact the Christian journey of many young people. This summer saw over 30,000 young people attend the Soul Survivor and Momentum festivals. That place has so many amazing memories for me, from experiencing God in amazing ways to great late night gigs and just fellowship with friends at 2am with a hot chocolate. Every year I would wait patiently until they released their annual live album, capturing that year's best songs from the festival.
This year's album is no different. 'Soul Survivor & Momentum Live 2011 - We Are The Free' is a double CD, with the second disc featuring recordings from Momentum - the student and young adult event hosted by Soul Survivor. The album features Soul Survivor worship leaders Beth Croft, Tom Field and Jamie Rodwell, plus internationally renowned British worship leaders Matt Redman and Tim Hughes. Looking at those names you know the album is going to be great.
And yes, the album really is great. Let me start with the recording and the final mix of the songs. The production on this album is as good as any live album I have heard this year, it really captures the live feeling of the event, with a great mix of sound to the whole album. It sounds full in depth and you can hear a strong mix of the people singing their hearts out along with the worship leaders performing on stage.

This now leads me onto the songs, as a selection of tracks that are or will be impacting the local church at the moment, this track listing is very strong. With a mix of songs from the latest Tim Hughes and Matt Redman albums and also a few from the Worship Central album, you know the songs standard is going to be high. Of course there are other songs that I didn't know, but very much fit perfectly on this album. One of those songs was the powerful and uplifting Always Yours. It instantly jumped out at me as a big powerful guitar driven anthem. If you're looking for two other great anthemic rock worship songs then look no further than Once Into The Darkness and the amazing Matt Redman led We Are The Free. I'm sure after hearing this version you will be singing the oh oh oh oh's all day.
But this album doesn't just look for the big rock sound anthems, it's also full of those great intimate moments with God, including Never Give Up, which I've got to say I love the vocals and everyone singing along to on this one. Then there is Avalanche from the last Hillsong United album, one of my favorite songs at the moment, so I was more than glad to hear this version on the album, it really shows this song can be sung with thousands of people or just on your own. But for me the song of the moment is Spirit Break Out, what a powerful cry to God to make a change in this nation, in our local church and in our own lives. Keep singing this song and wait to see what God is going to do in your life.
I could talk about each song, and how great it is, but the most important thing about this album is that it's a tool to be used in your own times of worship. I found myself on the train just telling God how amazing He is whilst listening to this album. Of course if you went to the event I highly recommend this album to you, and if you are looking for a very strong live album to use in your personal times of worship, this is the album to get. Glory To God, We Are The Free.
