Interview: Empire Nation
British band Empire Nation are supporting New Zealand's Parachute Band for the UK stretch of their world tour later this month. LTTM had the briefest of chats with the band's lead singer Edward to find out more about them.
For those who haven't heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got involved in making music?

The band was born out of a worship event a few years back, when we quickly discovered that we all had a similar passion to create music that not only glorifies God, but could change people's lives. We fully launched as a band in 2010, when we released our debut album 'Airtight'.

You're supporting Parachute Band on their UK tour dates in June, how did that come about?

We were brave enough to ask! (some good networking also helped)

When can we expect a new album from Empire Nation?

Hopefully September/ October this year, we're working with Resound Media on our second project, so we've been writing songs with Philippa Hanna and many other familiar names.

How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?

We probably fall into the pop rock category, though we try and incorporate many styles (especially on our coming album). Our influences vary from Brit Pop, Jazz, American Rock to Chilled Electro and European " Jimmy Eat World, Temper Trap, Kashmir, Herbie Hancock, R.E.M. to name a few.

If you could work with any song writer, who would it be and why?
That's a tough one, maybe Bono or Elvis Costello - to see how easily they can drum up ideas compared to us regular Joes.

In your opinion, what makes the perfect song?

I guess it depends on your mood and style, I think a good song is always simple... catchy melody and meaningful words all blended creatively over an awesome drum beat.

How would you define success in your career as a band?

We'd love to be able to take our music around the world, sharing our faith with those that don’t yet know how awesome God is.Â

What advice would you give to any aspiring bands out there?

Nothing is impossible... You won't become a success overnight, no matter how good you are, so be prepared for the long haul, but remember a little determination and prayer can go a long way.

You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your mp3 player. What track is it?

Everlong - Foo Fighters

What does the next year hold for Empire Nation?
Hopefully we'll be twice as busy, maybe get across into Europe for a few festivals... and a band holiday!
