Maryanne J. George Releases new Single 'Labor'

May 16 2024

Maryanne J. George, a multi-faceted worship leader who sings, writes and plays many different instruments, releases her new single 'Labor' on May 10th. She describes it as "a song about becoming a South Asian Mother. Identity is so integral. I can’t wait to share 'labor' with you".

Maryanne grew up in New York, the melting pot of the world. "I’m the child of immigrants. Much of what I know about music comes from my family. My earliest memories are filled with songs; almost every family get-together had a time of singing, and playing instruments. I learned how to play violin at the age of 4. I taught myself piano and guitar. I am notorious for not knowing any of the chords I play. Despite this, I eventually went on to serve at my home church in Hicksville, NY, where I started as a choir member, and eventually became a worship director.

Over the years, I’ve sang songs on Youtube, and other social media platforms… I’ve also led worship at a number of events. I’ve organically built a platform of loyal listeners. But if you’re new here, you might know me from Maverick City Music - a collective of worshipers committed to deconstructing unspoken rules that exist in the CCM and Gospel world. We’ve written songs together, recorded a few albums, did a little touring, and won some awards.

In October 2021, I recorded and released my debut EP, Not Just Stories. It was a grounding album, centered on the tenets of worship: surrender, devotion and sacrifice. It was a culmination of my spiritual journey with Jesus. It charted nationally. These were dreams I didn’t know were possible for a brown girl like me. But God made them happen."
