What I thought was going to be a little piano album, turned out to not be that at all. Yes the album, and it's sounds in general, are recorded around the piano as the main instrument - but there is so much more happening here musically. There are a few themes on this album, but I wanted to start with the musicianship of the album. The opening track ‘Sleeping In On Sunday’ has some stunning chord runs, there is something Beatles-esq about this song, I loved it. Then there are times on the album that you think this is a nice little pop record with tracks like in ‘This Life’ and ‘Guard My Life’ and on the flip side there are songs that are stripped back like ‘I Found You’ and ‘Every Day’ which are beautiful.

When you think you have just about worked out the album, Sophie drops the rocking and haunting title track ‘Trinkets’ which was a real wow moment, as it kind of didn’t fit the album from the first few tracks but still isn’t out of place. Before I got my head around that, up pops the disco/pop ‘Fearfully and Wonderfully Made’. Sophie isn’t scared to experiment with song sounds and styles, and with her stunning vocals her voice works in all of those genres.

Overall what I liked most about this album, apart from the musicianship and the strong vocals of Sophie, was the songwriting. This is an album that deals with at times issues that many songwriters wouldn’t want to write about and wouldn’t want to record. You have here an album of songs that to Sophie are clearly deeply personal, deeply honest, raw and powerful. With the album title being 'Trinkets' Sophie says she wants the listener to "catch a glimpse of the beauty, love, and hope I’ve found in Him as well", and that's what I took from it, after hearing this album it left me with a smile on my face. This album is deep down all about God's personal love, yet Sophie as a songwriter takes us on a very personal journey to show us that.
