Deon now brings us his latest work; second album 'I Just Want to Hear You'.
The opening track 'Heal Again' leaves the listener in no doubt that they are listening to a Gospel album, with some great musicianship that fits with this genre of music. 'Heal Again' also sets the tone for the lyrical content of the album.
The second track 'What's Coming Is' has a big gospel style intro that reminds of contemporary Marvin Sapp for whom Kipping has written for in the past. Following the big opening to the album there is a lot of light and shade with some subtle use of use of brass and some lovely piano playing.
A big track on the album is 'I Don't Look What I've Been Through', the title of the track forms the hook of the song and is probably the most memorable melody on the album as well as being clever lyrically.
Many of the tracks are live on the album, which again leaves you to marvel at the standard of musicianship in this genre. There are also a few tracks that could cross over into other genres, such as the more congregational worship song 'Never Cease' and 'Destiny is Waiting' that has a soulful stax feel to it.
Lyrically the album focuses on personal experience of God intervening in difficult circumstances in life. In general the tracks give you a feeling of a victorious outcome.
Whilst listening to the album, I had times where I wanted to hear Kipping proclaim the truth of who God is despite our circumstances, but then the theme of the album was to focus more on God being personal.
As someone who dips into this genre of music from time to time, I can guarantee that you will be amazed at the level of musicianship, but that it may take time to grow on you as there is an almost joyful feel to the music that we aren't so accustomed to in our culture at the moment.
This a great gospel album that has grown on me as I have listened to it and I highly recommend it.
