Looking at the album cover, and the name of the band, it will come as no surprise to you what the band sound like. Yes that's right people, it's folk music. People who dislike this sound and style will drop their heads as another band with the Mumford & Sons inspired sound hit the market. Yet if you are a fan of that style then Stomp Town Revival are one of the better folk bands out there, and this EP is top quality.
The EP opens with some nice picking acoustic guitar work on the track Guiding Me Home, but this foot thumping number has more than meets the eye. As the band let rip with some great rocking electric guitars, there is a dimension of rock swagger and a bit of an edge to the band that some folk groups miss out on.
Hearing a harmonica mighty bring out all of the Folk cliches, but mix that with a good melody and a good tune and you can see why people will love listening to 'Waiting For The Man'. I think this tune would sound great live, as would many others on the EP actually.
So, does the world need another rock folk band? Maybe not, but actually this EP has more edge and guts to it than many other album releases of the same genre. Yes it still is stepped in the original folk genre, which to be fair is the sound of the moment. Tracks like The Sun Will Find A Way and Leaning On The Everlasting Arms keep the origin of the sound and are great tunes, but for me the EP has more depth to it than I was expecting. I think that is what I like most about this collection of songs. Brilliant stuff.
