Brass Bands, not very cool, not very me. I can't think of many people who even like Brass Bands apart from my grandparents who go to London every year to the "Brass Bands Finals" where over 25 Brass Bands play the same long piece all day to see who is the best. Yes that's right my family are crazy. The only other time I can think of hearing a Brass Band is during the Christmas rush when the Salvation Army is out on Cardiff's main shopping street playing the classic Christmas Tunes from years gone by. I admit, I do enjoy that part of Christmas Shopping, humming along to those songs as you're running around to get the same old presents every year for the same old people while it's freezing and raining.
We do get sent some random albums to review at LTTM, this being one of them. Christian Music has moved on so much in the last 10 years, with more and more albums coming out from America, aimed at young people, I am just a little surprised that there is still a massive market for this kind of music.
So the album "Songs of Praise" is by The Regent Hall Salvation Army Band and as the press release says it's "Swelling With Emotion, Stirring, Inspire Great pride & Pleasure". Wow, I can't remember an album ever doing that to me. Ever. Surprise surprise this album didn't produce those feeling either. The album is 14 tracks of Brass Band music playing some of the most well know songs that have been played in church for the last 20 years, from 'Peace Is Flowing Like A River' to 'You Laid Aside Your Majesty', from 'Jesus Christ (Once Again)' to 'Light of The World'.
The album isn't all instrumental, no... Mr Stuart Pendred lends his vocals to two songs in 'Light of The World' and 'How Deep The Father's Love', which does add a nice extra feel to the album. Overall this album is produced and recorded well and sounds amazing (if that's what you're into). I just wish maybe the band had chosen some different worship songs as a lot of these were used by the King's Chamber Orchestra in their recent worship album. An album for some people, just not me.
