"This truly is the culmination of a nearly lifelong dream, to record and release an album of music that comes from my heart. But my motivation has changed dramatically over the last five decades. This isn’t about trying to be a great singer, musician, or composer. For one thing, at 57 years old, the voice is what it is, not that it ever was all that to begin with.
It’s also not about becoming famous, getting rich, wooing an audience, or looking for accolades or validation of my artistic endeavors. To quote Allen Ginsberg, “To gain your voice, you have to forget about having it heard.” That paradox has taken me more than half a lifetime to grasp, and this album, aptly entitled “Over My Head,” is a way to illustrate what that looks like for me. I do hope the music will speak to others’ hearts, of course, because it has been influenced by the kinds of joys and sadness, light places and dark places, that are common to us all."
