Read More As one of the gems of the British Christian music world, Phatfish and their talented lead singer Lou Fellingham have been writing songs and leading congregations in worship for over 17 years. Featured on this album, 'Best of Lou Fellingham Live' are 30 songs recorded live at the various events the group have performed at around the country. The album draws from Phatfish's back catalogue, well known classic church anthems, and indeed tracks from Lou's own three solo albums, 'Treasure' (2006), 'Promised Land' (2008) and 'Step Into The Light' (2010).
From the opening guitar riffs of 'To God Be The Glory' you know you're in for worship music of the utmost quality. Lou effortlessly leads the singing with her pitch perfect voice. "Praise the Lord, praise the Lord let the earth hear His voice". This updated rendition of the classic hymn sets the tone for the whole album.
Picking up one of the songs from her solo albums next, Lou introduces 'Promised Land' to the crowd, explaining a bit about the song and reminding the listener that this is a live album. With an album boasting 30 top worship tracks it's impossible to mention every highlight in this review, but quite frankly every track is worthy of a mention and truly earns its place on this collection. From the brilliant chorus of 'O God Of Love', "How good it is to be loved by You" - to the sense of awe and wonder in 'Amazing God', "Looking in the sky whoever could deny Your glory", this album is crammed full of superb songs for the church.
Disc One also boasts church anthems like 'I Will Say', in which the sizeable crowd provides spine tingling backing vocals, 'Holy Holy (Lift Up His Name)' with its atmospheric rolling drum beat, and 'In Christ Alone' with its passion-bursting lyrics. Meanwhile Disc Two kicks off with some serious rock guitars on 'To You King Jesus', which also continue in 'Come Let Us Enter' where the crowd keeps time with their clapping. 'Breathe' showcases Lou's voice beautifully as she reaches the high notes seamlessly. "So breathe on us now, come breathe on us now, come pour out Your love from heaven".
Two more hymns are featured on this second disc, 'Before The Throne Of God Above' and 'Praise My Soul The King Of Heaven', both sitting comfortably alongside more modern songs like 'Pardoned' and the jazzy 'In Jesus'. There's also a cover of Matt Redman's 'The Fathers Song', plus some beautiful strings on 'Salvation's Song'.
'See The Lamb Of God' is one of those slow-burners, gradually building up the sense of praise, leading into the bridge of "Lift up His name with the sound of singing". The album closes with 'There Is A Day' which must have one of the best choruses of any song on the album: "For we will see Him, as He is. Then all hurt and pain will cease, and we'll be with Him forever, and in His glory we will live". So much power and emotion in these heart-wrenching lyrics - it's a really stunning goose-bump end to the album.
Throughout the album Lou is backed by her able band of musicians, carving out world class guitar parts, beautiful keyboard melodies - particularly noteworthy in the peaceful quieter numbers - and of course strong drums that provide power and energy to the anthems.
The majority of these songs are written by Lou and her husband Nathan, and if proof were needed that they have produced some of the church's best loved songs over the past decade then this album is all the evidence anyone needs. It's just track after track of absolute masterpieces, stunning worship anthems that draw us closer to God.
Capturing this best-of collection as a live album is a stroke of genius because the natural environment for these songs is to be sung by a congregation, fully submerged in worship. Every church musician, singer and worship leader should buy this album to be inspired, excited and empowered.
