The new live album includes a special guest feature from Lauren Daigle on the track 'A Place Called Earth', as well as including several other tracks from Jon's solo studio album 'Departures', released earlier this year.
These songs are meant to be heard in this environment, this is where Jon Foreman and his solo work are at their best. Jon's musical journey began in 1996 in a surfboard filled garage in San Diego, California. These were the humble beginnings of multi-platinum selling, Grammy Award winning alt-rock band SWITCHFOOT.
As the stages and crowds grew larger, Foreman felt the need for connection more than ever. His solo career began in parking lots and on sidewalks, playing for the handful of fans who would stick around after SWITCHFOOT shows.
It was these "after shows" and the indescribable connection of just a few souls joining their voices in the night, that inspired his first four solo EPs in 2007. Those four EP's were followed up by another series of EPs in the spring of 2015 titled, "The Wonderlands" - featuring 24 songs, a song for every hour of the day.
So when I pressed play and heard these songs recorded in this manner and even in this raw style I knew we were onto a winner. These songs would not fit on a Switchfoot album, past, present or future, these are very much songs for Jon to do in his own way and his own style. There are so many good songs on this live album, Resurrect Me is Jon Foreman doing his best Mike Jagger impressions, The Cure For Pain really pulls at the heart strings, Only Hope is sung with a calm passion, Inheritance sounds like an early Coldplay album track.
Yet the song that people will be drawn to the most due to the title, is Jesus, I Have My Doubts. I am really happy someone has written and recorded a track that actually puts the individuals doubts into song, this isn't a song about doubting Jesus and his power, this is a self reflective, honest song, that very few songwriters would write. It would be wrong for anybody to say what this song is about as the only person who can say that is Jon Foreman. But for me this is a song about looking for Jesus in a the world when you have doubts is God in all of this madness.
If you have ever enjoyed one of the Jon Foreman EP's you will really enjoy this release, it's raw, honest as ever, but actually creative which can sometimes be hard to convey when recording a live album. It has happiness, sadness, and real thoughts and feelings. Yet for me it's the live aspect where this album is really at it's best and where Jon in that freedom is at his songwriting and singing best. I would even go as far to say that when Jon is writing deep from the soul and heart, that's when you hear his best work for his solo stuff and for Switchfoot.
