With so many artists releasing Christmas albums this year, I have to tell you about this Christmas album from Phil Wickham named Songs For Christmas. This ten track album includes two original songs, Christmas Time and Evermore, plus seven well known carols and an instrumental piece.
Phil himself explains, "My biggest goal was to create something classic enough for people to play in their houses while they're decorating their tree, yet unique enough to stand out from the thousands of other Christmas records out there". Phil himself explains, "My biggest goal was to create something classic enough for people to play in their houses while they're decorating their tree, yet unique enough to stand out from the thousands of other Christmas records out there". Being as this is released in October, it might be a bit early to put up the tree, but I can 100% see what he means by this.
The whole album tends to have a very traditional feel about it, maybe it is a bit 'Christmas Postcard' at times, but there is something quiet nice about thinking of a traditional time when Christmas can be so manic and crazy for people. The marching drum led sound of The Little Drummer Boy expresses this in abundance. Yet for me one of the really standout songs has to be the Phil Wickham penned piano haunting Evermore. If you're looking for a great new Christmas song then this is it. The song I really thought Phil would make sound most traditional is the well known song Silent Night, yet what Phil has done is actually recorded it with a bit of a tempo (don't panic, it's not punk rock) yet it does have a little swing to it, and the nice flute on this one has to be commended.
The simple, yet stirring, O Come All Ye Faithful ends the album - this version just brings back those warm child like traditional Christmases feelings of yesteryear. The whole album is full of them, with Phil adding a small sparkle of his own style to them, trying not to change them too much but just enough to make them interesting. So get the tree out of the attic, or from the local tree shop, and start putting up those decorations, Christmas Time is here.
