The difficult second album has finally come for Owl City, who have just released All Things Bright And Beautiful. Produced by Owl City's Adam Young, this new album is a follow up to the platinum-selling debut album 'Ocean Eyes' which included their most well known song 'Fireflies', a song which reached number 1 in the mainstream charts in the US, UK, Australia, Ireland and Netherlands.
So how do you go about making a second album which is as good as your first, and even try and make it a better collection of songs? Not an easy task for any band or...

So how do you go about making a second album which is as good as your first, and even try and make it a better collection of songs? Not an easy task for any band or artist. There's a very electro-pop start to opening tracks The Real World and Deer In The Headlights. Both are very bright, fast and happy. I think happy seems to be a good word to sum up the sound of this whole album actually. When I started listening to this collection of songs I found myself smiling and I'm not sure why. Maybe I'm just happy or maybe these pop beats are having an effect on me.
The happy go lucky electro pop sounds continue in songs Kamikaze and Honey And The Bee, there is also something very quirky about this whole album. This is an album that has moved on a little bit from debut Ocean Eyes, it's an album that wants to be played in clubs as well as in your house or at a friend's BBQ when the sun is shining. If you thought that mainstream success would water down Owl City's lyrics, think again. Listen to track Galaxies and you hear some great lyrics that declare the glory of God. Adam Young sings "Dear God, You're the only North Star, I would follow this far..... Hercules, you've got nothing to say to me, Cause you're not the blinding light that I need. For He is the saving grace of the Galaxies". But what has always been the strong point of Owl City is that they're not scared to write lyrics that are a bit different, with phrases that when you first hear them make you think, what did they just say? But these are lyrics that are a bit fresh and different.
This is a great album, Owl City have taken a step forward but not too much to upset fans of the first album. Some great pop, electro dance songs on this one, something to make you smile when you listen. Owl City are back and in my opinion, back bigger and better.
