Shh don't tell anyone but I've never been to Spring Harvest. Call myself a Christian? 30 years on the Christian clock, and I’ve never been. I’ve nothing against it, it’s just we normally have not-often-seen relatives over for Easter. But I've always enjoyed the live albums that emerge a few months later, since the 1992 classic hit my cassette deck and showed me what a wonderful range of writers, musicians and worship leaders the UK can produce. And here’s further evidence.

There's a good collection here, songs that are #trending right now across the UK, if not the world, such as “Good, Good Father”, “Lion and the Lamb” and “Forever” plus some new ones, and there’s a couple of treasure trove items too, such as the crowd pleasing closer “There is a Day”. It could be my ageing ears but there wasn’t much to evidence live recording in terms of crowd-singing captured in the microphones I expected “No Longer Slaves” to join me in rousing the lounge ceiling - but there is plenty of applause as each track ends and fades so there’s no questioning that it all genuinely took place in a large tent somewhere whilst I was squashed up at the dining table next to Grandma as she struggled with the parsnips.

Highlights are provided by Lou Fellingham and Cathy Burton who would get Voice-chair spins within seconds of drawing breath if they entered the Saturday night TV show I’m sure. They have different voices but they must drink the same water, as their frequencies resonant deep inside me every time they sing new songs or old. To be honest, they could read the accommodation arrangements for your church group and it would still sound beautiful. It's encouraging and re-assuring to hear such a wide range of talented UK musicians leading worship: in particular Sound of Wales have got some serious lung capacity.

If you’re looking for all your current favourite songs, plus a couple of others thrown in for good measure, then this is a great place to start. You may find stronger sounding versions of those favourites elsewhere on other collections, but these are all good performances. Of special mention is “Great is our God” with it’s straight from the start wake-up campers guitar thrashes and cracking drum sound.

So don’t just see it as a memento for those who made the event itself: it’s a good solid collection and captures the worship year so far very well.
