Andrew Greer has released his second album, 'Angel Band: The Hymn Sessions' which features 11 of Andrew's beloved hymns plus one original song. The album is produced by Greer himself and Chris Kimmerer, and brings together some of the top names in bluegrass, Gospel and Christian music including Ginny Owens and Cindy Morgan.
Andrew's sublime debut album Open Book was well worth checking out, but now that he has released a selection of hymns with many duets, does this album keep the same quality?

Andrew's sublime debut album Open Book was well worth checking out, but now that he has released a selection of hymns with many duets, does this album keep the same quality?
The simple answer is yes. Andrew has taken these hymns and changed them to sound how he wants them to sound, some traditionalists might be horrified with it, yet for me the strongest part of this album is the fact that Andrew seems to have free range to do what he wants and to be clever with it. I Am Thine/Near The Cross with Ginny Owens featured on it has some nice acoustic guitar work and creative orchestral bits. Never Grow Old is a driving mid-tempo mid-rock song that fits on the album perfectly. From rock to folk music there is even space for some Gospel on this album. The Gospel inspired tracks Jesus Paid It All and I've Been Searching are both beautiful worship songs, with a stunning choir singing out in both that you will just love worshiping along with.
If you aren't dancing along to Down By The Riverside I don't know what will get you up on your feet, with some mid 50's American folk inspired music coming out in this one it's an interesting style of song. The folk style also comes over in the truly stunning Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus with some clever guitar on the track, and on the whole of the album actually.
This album is very very different to Andrew's previous album. Totally different in style yet the creativeness of both albums has to be commended in their own right. Hymns aren't everyone's favorite style of music, yet in a strange way these hymns don't sound like hymns at all. Andrew has recorded them in a way only he can, capturing the power of the lyrics in these timeless classic worship tracks. This album is well worth checking out.
