Texas rockers Abandon have released an Expanded Edition of their second album 'Control'. Originally released last Spring, the new version features the full 13-track original album, plus four songs newly remixed by members of popular bands Mute Math, David Crowder Band, Family Force 5 and Paper Route. "I was really honored that Abandon would ask me to be a part of this remix project," said David Crowder. "I have such respect and love for the other guys they asked; it was humbling. 'Control' was the follow up to their 2009 debut 'Searchlights', with the new album being produced by Paul Moak (Third Day, Mat Kearney, The Blind Boys of Alabama), Chris Stevens (who also produced 'Searchlights') and Josh Silverberg. The San Antonio-based band has gathered a Dove nomination, widespread critical acclaim and tours alongside Fireflight, Building 429, Remedy Drive, Teen Mania's Acquire the Fire, plus many major faith-based festivals.
Feel It In Your Heart leans on the dance rock sound, with a Maroon 5 feel to it this is a catchy little track. Indeed the same could be said about the whole of the album with its mix of dance beats, synth work and heavy guitars. Help has some really catchy elements to the song, with the ohhh's making this the perfect pop song. Live It Out and S.O.S have an edgier rock feel to them, with the latter being even a little bit punkier, but without being punk, if that makes sense!
New Years Day is a piano led upbeat number, with the band singing "The colour in my world. I never felt so alive, like a brand new sunrise". If this song doesn't make you smile I don't know what will. Talk To Me takes the album back to the poppier side, with some swagger and sway, this is the perfect party song. I have to admit the majority of this album is very upbeat and Under Fire is another one, with a bigger faster tempo in the chorus than the verse. Again the whole album is full of great pop rock party tracks with great uplifting messages, but the album finishes on a heart wrenching song called Hero with the lyrics talking about the Saviour of the world and what He did for us, a perfect and stunning way to finish this album.
I suppose with this album you are more interested in a review of the remixes on this album. Well, let me tell you these remixes and extra tracks are more intense than their original tracks, if a little different. Of course there is more of an dance element to them with the David Crowder Remix of Under Fire being one of those for the clubs. New Years Day (Chad Howat Remix) has a slightly 50's sway about it, within that there is mixed some crazy guitars and hectic dance beats giving it a different sound to the original.
The remix tracks do add something to this album, yet if you have Control already you may want to find a website that just sells those extra tracks as they are certainly very good, yet don't make the album any better as a whole. If you're new to Abandon then please do check out this pop/rock/dance based album as it will leave you with a smile after just a few listens.
