Blog: MOBO Winner Triple O Talks To LTTM

Oct 10 2011

Last week Christian rapper Triple O won the 2011 MOBO Award for Best Gospel Act. At the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards show, which celebrates urban music across many different genres, Triple O rubbed shoulders with fellow winners and global superstars Jessie J, Adele, Rihanna, Tinie Tempah and Boyz II Men.

LTTM grabbed a few minutes of Triple O's time to find what it all means to him.

What was it like attending the awards show, and how does it feel to have won?

Attending the awards ceremony was truly a great experience. Just having the opportunity to sit amongst so many respected individuals within the mainstream arena was such a privilege. I remember watching the MOBO's years ago, never would I have thought back then that I'd ever be receiving one. How does it feel? It feels good. For ones work to be acknowledged by any establishment is always appreciated, talk less of the MOBO's. So even just being nominated was something in and of itself, but winning, now that was just special.

How did you first find out you were nominated for a MOBO?

Haha, now that's a funny story. I was on my way to collect more physical copies of the album ('Flatline' - available to purchase on itunes) - and I received a BB message from Guvna B, which read 'congrats on the MOBO'. That's all it said. I was so confused, so I replied asking him what he was talking about and he said that he had confirmation that my name was on the final list. I then went on the official MOBO website and saw that this was true. So either way it was one big shock.

For those who don't know much about you, can you tell us a little about your musical background?

Sure. I have been doing music for about seven and a half years. I put out a promotional CD back in November 2005, before releasing my first EP "G2G - Grime To Gospel" (which is available on itunes) in April 2008. In December 2010 "Come Home" was released - this happened to be the first single from the "Flatline" album which was later released on the 11th of July 2011 (Both of which are available on itunes).

In between those two projects I released to free mixtapes "The Overnight Garden" (February 2011) and "24 - The Gratitude EP" (May 2011).

Have you been inundated by the media since the MOBOs?

Yes I have been. But its a good thing. Its just a chance for me to elevate and promote the gospel message in new arenas. I look forward to doing more. People need to hear the truth about Jesus Christ and salvation through him alone (John 14:6) - and so I plan to deliver just that.

Do you think new doors will be opening for you as a result of winning the award?

That's inevitable, but I just need to pray that the Lord gives me the grace to remain humbled in him (John 3:30) and focused on the bigger picture, namely the elevation of his name. Whatever does come my way I just need to prepare myself for the road ahead.Triple O - Flatline

What's next for Triple O?

What's next? Eerrmm... Just promoting the album "Flatline". That is my main priority now. Taking that and all my previous material to a whole new audience. "The Overnight Garden Vol.2" is also in the pipeline, scheduled for release in February 2012.

I can also confirm that we have a big surprise for people come the end of this year, so watch this space.
