How the Kairos band members all meet?
We have all known each other for a long time, Tim the bassist married my sister, I grew up with mark and the Portuguese twins, Jon and Jonatas, met the rest of us at a local youth group that we were a part of.
What kind of style of music would you say that your like?
I guess the style that we're aiming for is the indie rock style, but also aim for our songs to be filled with hooks that are catchy, so you may find a hint of pop in there as well. We've been described in the past as "if you like the idea of power pop new wave post-punk brought up to date with the occasional Beatles-ish melody line, then you'll like this."
Tell us a bit about the new EP?
We spent a week in the south of England recording with producer Paul Burton at G2 Studios. "Piercing the Darkness" was inspired by the Will Smith blockbuster film "I Am Legend." The whole theme on how light overcomes the darkness and what lies within that darkness was what kicked started the idea for writing the song, which became the title track for the EP. The rest of the tunes definitely have an underlying message of hope and positive lyrics that may help the listener to look at life as the glass is half full, rather than half empty. "Break the Cycle" and "Make a Move" are about breaking the mould and breaking free from past, whether that's from mistakes or even the culture that you have been raised in. They are about breaking free to be the person that we need to be to make this world a better place. The song "Solution" is my favourite, it's raw, graphic, uncomfortable and real. It's about a girl that was once heading the right direction in life but got caught up in the wrong crowd and ends up past out on the floor from an overdose. She feels empty, used and worthless, searching for love in sex and drugs, but the song then goes on to there must be a solution, and there must be room for mercy. I believe that there is a chance for even people that have hit rock bottom in life for them to turn around and even use their experiences to be relevant to other people in similar situations. Even the smallest light shines bright in the darkness, and we're trying to be that small light in a dark world through making great music and living out what is in our lyrics.
Whats your song writing process?
We have our own basic studio set up so we can all play and multi-track with the whole band playing, which is gives us the ability to re-work the new songs until we are happy with it. I'm the main writer at the moment since starting our journey as a band, so I think I write best when I'm inspired by something, which doesn't happen too often, so when it does I jump right on it. I then feel like there's a surge of creative energy trapped inside of me and usually get the block of it written within a few days, I get highly motivated, driven and pull all my spare time into it and don't feel that sense of relief until its finished! I have a patient and understanding wife! I then bring it to the rest of the band to add their musical flavour to it, and craft it further. We then record it as a full band, then, re-work it again with everyone.
Which do you prefer playing Live or recording albums/EP's?
Love playing live, it's awesome.
Where is the best gig venue you have played at?
We flew to Portugal last year, which was awesome. We did a mini tour and the whole trip was top notch. One of the gigs that stood out was when we played at an outdoor festival to a load of people and they loved us. We did our very first encore as the crowd were shouting and chanting for more when we first walked off!
Do you enjoying playing the festivals?
Yes, when we've had the odd opportunity to do so, but we want to play more!
Whats on your I pod at the moment?
About 40GB of pro tools sessions of new recorded material, so just data!
Your stuck on an island, its hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your mp3. What track is it?
One of the tracks from Sigor Ros, great creative music.
What does the next year hold for Kairos?
We are writing new songs, getting our diary booked up, and working towards new success to go further as a band in 2009. We are especially looking forward to playing in London for the first time this summer and also we're pumped about playing The Big Church Day Out event in may.
